D-U-N-S®: Build Your Business Credit and Open Doors
The D-U-N-S® (by Dun & Bradstreet) is a 9-digit identifier that links your business to a commercial credit profile. Here we explain why it matters and how to get it for free.
What is the D-U-N-S®?
It’s a unique number assigned by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) that identifies
your company globally and allows you to build your business credit profile
(payment history with suppliers, business age, legal data, etc.).
Useful Tip: To do business with certain platforms and large companies, your organization may need a D-U-N-S®. For example, Apple requires it for company/school developer accounts.
Why is it important for Hispanic
business owners?
Separate your business credit from your personal credit and gain credibility with suppliers and partners.
With a payment history, it’s easier to obtain net-30/60 terms and higher credit limits.
Some corporations and marketplaces check your D-U-N-S® before opening B2B accounts.
Helps avoid confusion with similarly named businesses and ensures consistent data.
Important: For businesses working with the U.S. federal government, since April 4, 2022 the UEI (Unique Entity ID) on SAM.gov has replaced the D-U-N-S®. You can have both (D-U-N-S® for commercial/private credit and UEI for government).
How to Get Your D-U-N-S® (Free)
- 1. Check if you already have one: Many businesses are already in D&B’s database. If you exist, claim or update your profile.
- 2. If you don’t have one: Apply for a D-U-N-S® on the D&B portal (standard request is free).
- 3. Have ready: legal business name, physical address, phone number, contact name, entity type, and number of employees (if applicable).
- 4. Processing time: It may take a few days; D&B offers optional paid expedited services.
- 5. Confirm and save your number: It will arrive by email; use it consistently for all applications.
Liquidela Tip: Always use the same legal name and address with banks, suppliers, licenses, and your D-U-N-S®. Consistency speeds up approvals.
